Assessment of Eligibility for Application
Individuals who are expected to undergo the Eligibility Screening should contact Academic Service Office for the Life and Environmental Sciences Area in advance.
Email us to obtain necessary documents and email them back for the assessment by June 30, 2017. If you are deemed eligible for admission, you will be given a passcode needed on the “Educational Background” page of the Web Entry System.

Web Entry
You can apply to the University of Tsukuba online by our Web Entry system. Read the guidelines carefully before applying.
Submission must be made during: July 3, 2017 (from 12 p.m. JST) – July 21, 2017 (by 3 p.m. JST)
Sign Up
First, you will need to create your own account to login. Once you make an account, you may save the data you entered and log back in later to continue.
Activation
When you sign up, activation email will be sent to your email address registered. Click the activation URL on the email to activate your account.
Login
For the first time after the activation, you’re already logged in. Just click on “Login” button to begin. When you visit our Login page the second time or later, enter your email address and password to login.
My Page
At the “My Page”, you need to click on the “Application Form” button for the “Master’s Program, Five-year Consecutive Doctoral Program”.
On the page, you can edit your login information or reset password.
Application Form
There are four sections in the Application Form.

  1. Program of Your Choice / Applicant’s Information
  2. Professor of Your Choice
  3. Eligibility
  4. Educational Background

Each section with * is a mandatory field. Please fill out completely. (If mandatory field is empty or the information you enter is improper, error message will appear and you will not be able to proceed to the next section.) Each section will be saved automatically when you click on “Proceed” button on each confirmation page, and you can continue from where you left off when you login back. Use one-byte alphabet and numbers to enter all the information.
Upload JPEG file of your ID photo in “1. Program of Your Choice / Applicant’s Information”.
If you graduated from a university or other educational institution outside Japan, upload a JPEG file of your degree certificate to the Web Entry system in “4. Educational Background”. (Eligibility will be examined since the educational system differs from the universities in Japan.)

Payment

You must pay the examination fee before submitting your application. The University can accept;

  1. online credit card payment for both domestic and overseas applicants
  2. convenience store payment for domestic applicants only.

Government-sponsored foreign students are exempted from paying the fee. (The payment screen will not appear.)

Credit Card Payment: Follow the instructions given at the last stage of Web Entry system and pay your fees by credit card. After the payment, you will be notified of a receipt number. Enter the number into the “Receipt Number” box and click on “Submit” button to proceed.

Convenience Store Payment: Follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system and pay your fees at a convenience store in Japan. When you apply for ‘Convenience Store Payment’ online, you will receive the Examination Fee Statement with an 11-digit or a 13-digit code. After the payment, enter the code and payment date into the boxes on the Web Entry system and click on “Submit” button to proceed.

Submission
After the payment is confirmed, you can submit your application by clicking “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click on the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the University, and you can no longer change or modify the information. Be sure to double-check before proceeding.
After you submit your application, a confirmation email will be sent to the email address that you registered. Be sure to check it.
(Check and adjust spam filter settings in your email account beforehand so that you can receive an email from the “entry.ap-graduate.tsukuba.ac.jp” domain.)
Create PDF
After submission, PDF documents will be downloaded. For treatment of the documents, follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry and be sure to download the PDF documents. Make sure you print these documents.
You can download them from the Web Entry system only while the system is open (July 3, 2017 (from 12 p.m. JST) – July 21, 2017 (by 3 p.m. JST)).

The document will be sent out by registered airmail on September 12, 2017.

2. Eligibility for Application

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria and have or expect to have at least one year of full-time or part-time working experience by March 2018. (This includes employment at a company, public office, educational institution and other organizations, and homemaking.)

(A) No eligibility screening is required for the following individuals:

  • Individuals who have graduated from a Japanese four-year university
  • Individuals who have earned a bachelor’s degree
  • Individuals who have completed a 16-year school education curriculum in a foreign country
  • Individuals who have been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

  • Individuals who are 22 years of age or older as of March 2018, and whose qualification is recognized as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree as the result of the Eligibility Screening conducted by us

Applicants who currently work for a government agency, school, or company (except part-time workers) must submit a letter of approval for taking the entrance examination issued by their supervisor or a declaration written by the applicants themselves. Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used not only for affairs concerning admission and screening, but also research and study aimed at improvement of the admission procedure and the university education. We will carefully take care of the data not to be disclosed as a specific person. Also, we will use the data to screen students for scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.

4. Examination Fees

5. Application Procedure

  1. Visit the Web Entry System to apply. The Web Entry System will be available from July 3, 2017 12pm until July 21, 2017 3pm (JST). Once you submit your application, you can no longer change or modify the information. Be sure to double-check before proceeding.

  2. Some of the documents have to be submitted by registered mail or hand, and these must be received by July 21, 2017 3pm (JST). When you submit your application online, the system will ask you to create Address Sheet in PDF format. Print out the sheet to submit the required documents to us.
    If your materials are not received by the due date, you will not be able to take the exam.

10 minutes of presentation, referring to the Research Plan and Activity/ Research Achievement Record, on jobs, civil activities, and other experiences gained after graduation, thoughts on the environment through the experience, motivation for applying for the program, and research plans after enrollment. Use of laptops is allowed. (In principle, applicants are required to bring in and operate their own laptops. An LCD projector is available for use on site. Contact the admission office of the Master’s Program in Environmental Sciences for details.) The presentation is followed by a comprehensive interview (15 minutes).

7. Testing Location, Announcement of Acceptance and Enrollment Procedure

Announcement of Acceptance

Acceptance will be announced at 10 am on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 to 10 am on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.
The examinee numbers of the successful applicants will be posted on the website. Acceptance letters will be sent out to successful applicants on the same day by registered mail.

Enrollment Procedure

  1. (1)Enrollment procedure guidelines (enclosed with documents to be submitted) will be sent to successful applicants on Friday, February 16, 2018. Refer to the guidelines to take necessary procedures.
    Applicants with a job (except part-time workers) must submit a document describing either an order to attend a training course, a certification of leave of absence, or an approval for enrollment, issued by their supervisors as well.

Special Provision on Educational Method Stipulated in Article 14 of the Standards for Establishment of Graduate Schools

1. Education provided under special provision

  1. Along with the progress of science technology and the sophistication of society, there are increasing demands for the return of working individuals to graduate schools. In response to these demands, Article 14 of the Standards for Establishment of Graduate Schools stipulates that graduate schools may, if necessary from an educational standpoint, provide education through appropriate means, which include conducting classes or research guidance in the evening and other certain hours and periods.
    This stipulation provides more working individuals with opportunities to receive graduate school education while in employment and to develop the knowledge and skills to assume leadership roles in educational research and practices. Under Article 14 of the Standards for Establishment of Graduate Schools, master’s and doctoral programs in the University of Tsukuba Graduate Schools, which have achieved in fostering skilled professionals and re-educating working individuals, have introduced a day/evening course system to enhance education and research activities.

  2. Requirements to complete the programs
    Requirements to complete the programs under the application of this special provision are as follows.

    Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences
    Master’s Program in Biological Sciences
    1. Complete a minimum of 30 credits in day courses and courses provided under Article 14 within the standard two year period.
    2. The number of credits normally required to complete the program is shown below.

      Master’s Program in Biological Sciences A minimum of 30 credits in common/ specialized courses (include seminars in the area of specialization, research method, and common courses and elective courses in the program)

    Master’s Program in Agro-Bioresources Science and Technology

    2. Submit a program completion plan to the advisor and the Chair of the program and obtain their approvals at the beginning of the school year.
    3. The number of credits normally required to complete the program is shown below.

      (except Biosystem Course)
      A minimum of 30 credits in total, including common specialized courses (include 2 credits in compulsory courses) and specialized courses (include 20 credits in compulsory courses: advanced courses, seminars I and II, and special research I and II in the area of specialization)

      Master’s Program in Agro-Bioresources Science and Technology
      A minimum of 30 credits in total, including 11 credits in 3 common courses (compulsory), 3 or more basic courses, and 2 specialized courses (in the area of specialization)
      (For Biodiplomacy course, a minimum of 40 credits in compulsory courses and elective courses in total are necessary.)

Cooperative Graduate School System

Due to the rapid progress and further sophistication of science and technology, research fields have become more departmentalized and specialized. At the same time, there emerge new interdisciplinary fields that go beyond the boundaries of traditional academic systems, prompting the need for integrated research.
Interdisciplinary research that requires a wide range of knowledge from basics to application areas has attached more importance to cooperation between researchers from different fields. There is an increased demand for new methods of fostering researchers.
The Cooperative Graduate School System was established to respond to these academic and social needs. We have cooperated with a large number of research institutes run by the government, independent administrative institutions, and private companies in and outside of Tsukuba Science City. We employ researchers from these institutes as Professors (Cooperative Graduate School) and Associate Professors (Cooperative Graduate School) and have them supervise the research of our students at laboratories equipped with the latest facilities. Our aim is to diversify and expand the educational and research domain for further enhancement of graduate school education, and to develop new research areas by promoting exchanges with these research institutes.
Among these efforts, the Cooperative Graduate School System is distinguished as the method organized solely by researchers from research institutes, who give research guidance in each program (from selection of students to granting of degrees) utilizing their advanced research environment.
