Assessment of Eligibility for Application
Email us to obtain necessary documents by October 23, 2017. If you are deemed eligible for admission, you will be given a passcode needed on the Web Entry System.

Web Entry
You can apply to the University of Tsukuba online by our Web Entry system. Read guidelines carefully before applying.
Submission must be made during: October 27 (from 12 a.m. JST) – November 30, 2017 (by 5 p.m. JST)
Sign Up
First, you will need your own account to login. Once you make an account, you may save the data you entered and log back in later to continue.
Activation
When you sign up, activation email will be sent to your email address registered. Click the activation URL on the email to activate your account.
Login
For the first time after the activation, you’re already logged in. Just click on “Login” button to begin. When you visit our Login page the second time or later, enter your email address and password to login.
My Page
At the “My Page”, you need to click on the “Application Form” button.
On the page, you can edit your login information or reset password.
Application Form
There are four sections in the Application Form.

  1. Applicant’s Information
  2. Course Information/ Preferences
  3. Eligibility
  4. Educational Background

Each section will be saved when you click on “Proceed to ***” button on each confirmation page. After saving, you can continue from where you left off when you login back.

On “1. Applicant’s Information,” upload your ID photo in JPEG format.

On “3. Eligibility,” describe your motivations for the application, academic/non-academic background, study plan(s), and future career plan(s) within 1,000 words in English.

On “4. Educational Background,” applicants who have graduated from a university outside Japan are required to upload their degree certificate in JPEG format, which is one of the documents to be submitted. (Since each country has different education systems, we need to confirm their eligibility for application.)

Submission
You can submit your application by clicking “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click on the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the University, and you will not be able to go back to edit. Make sure to double-check before proceeding.
Print Generated PDF Documents
After clicking on the “Submit to Apply” button, “Reference Card” and “Address Sheet” will be generated in PDF for printing.

On the same day, HBP office will send you a notification of result for first screening and will let you know the venue for the second screening.

Payment

You must pay the examination fee before submitting your application. The University can accept:

  1. online credit card payment for both domestic and overseas applicants
  2. convenience store payment for domestic applicants only.

*The applicants who have received MEXT scholarship are exempted from paying the fees.

3. Web Entry and Supporting Documents to be Submitted

With our Web Entry system, you can submit the application online. Read this section carefully before applying online. The first screening is conducted on both the information of web Entry and the documents to be posted.

You are requested to upload the JPEG data of your ID photo for the Reference Card. The ID photo must be taken within three months with no hats or other head adornments.

Letter of Recommendation All applicants A recommendation letter of the department dean or the supervisor, from which the applicant graduated/is expected to graduate, should be sent to the admission office. The recommendation letter must be written on A4/letter-size paper with the department-letter-head printed and with the signature of the recommender. The letter must be sent by the recommender directly by postal mail.
Important Notice: The letter for an applicant who is a non-native-speaker of English with no TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS must include an evaluation of the applicant’s English proficiency.

4. Examination Fee

5. Application Procedure

  1. 1.Visit our Web Entry system to apply. The Web Entry system will be available from October 27 – November 30, 2017.
  2. 2.Some of the documents have to be mailed to the Office of Ph.D. Program in Human Biology by express mail. Your documents need to be received by November 30, 2017. Original documents submitted will be returned to you after the examination. When you submit your application online, the system will ask you to create the Address Sheet. Print out the sheet created and attach it to the envelope when sending the required documents to us.

7. Announcement of Acceptance and Enrollment Procedure

Announcement of Acceptance

The examinee numbers of successful applicants will be posted on our website on February 14, 2018.
Acceptance letters will be sent to the successful applicants. The letters will be posted by express mail to the applicants residing overseas or by registered mail to those residing in Japan.

Enrollment Procedure

  1. 1.Enrollment Procedure Guidelines (which contain documents to be submitted before entrance) will be sent out to successful applicants on middle of February 2018.
    Follow the direction in the Guidelines.
    (Note)
    The successful applicants are expected to notify us before the date above if they change their postal address.
  2. 2.The deadline of Enrollment Procedure
    You must send your documents with a specified envelop by the beginning of March. Follow the direction in the Guidelines.
  3. 3.You will be offered the Financial Support from the SIGMA, which would assist you to dedicate yourself to your study. To apply for the Financial Support, you need to complete the Research Plan form that will be sent via email by the SIGMA early March (the deadline for submission to be announced).
    (1)Admission Fees: 282,000 yen
    (2)Tuition Fees: 535,800 yen.
    We provide you with the exemptions of tuition fees. Please see the detail information for our Finanicial Support.

  4. 4.All applicants with a job (except part-time) need a document or a letter (ex; an order for a training course, a letter of leave of absence or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that you are available to complete the program.
  5. 5.International applicants must acquire a Status of Residence suitable for entrance to a graduate school, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951), before beginning enrollment procedures. Those who wish to enter this program as an international student must acquire Status of Residence as a “Student.”
    The documents to apply a Status of Residence suitable for entrance will be sent in the beginning of March by SIGMA.

8. Student Support System

In the Ph.D. Program in Human Biology, the Student Support Committee plays a central role and conducts various activities to support enrolled students in their studies. For example, it provides support for students’ living expenses and tuition fees from the Financial Support Scheme for Special Fellows, as well as financial support for overseas activities and for students’ self-initiated activities. The types of support are shown in detail below:
