(A) No eligibility screening is required for the following individuals:
  • Individuals who have earned or are expected to earn a master’s degree by March 2018
  • Individuals who have earned or are expected to earn a specialized degree by March 2018
  • Individuals who have earned or are expected to earn a master’s degree from a university outside Japan as of March 2018.

(B) Eligibility screening is required for the following individuals:
  • Individuals who have graduated from, or are expecting to graduate from, a junior college or upper secondary school
  • Individuals who have graduated from, or are expecting to graduate from, a vocational school or similar school
  • Individuals who have graduated from, or are expecting to graduate from, a four-year university

Assessment of Eligibility for Application
Email us to obtain necessary documents by June 26, 2017. If you are deemed eligible for admission, you will be given a passcode needed on the Web Entry System.
Applicants Who Need Special Considerations
If you need special considerations due to disability, contact us by June 26, 2017.
Web Entry
You can apply to the University of Tsukuba online by our Web Entry system. Read guidelines carefully before applying.
Submission must be made during: June 16 (from 10 a.m. JST) – July 18, 2017 (by 5 p.m. JST)
Sign Up
First, you will need your own account to login. Once you make an account, you may save the data you entered and log back in later to continue.
Activation
When you sign up, activation email will be sent to your email address registered. Click the activation URL on the email to activate your account.
Login
For the first time after the activation, you’re already logged in. Just click on “Login” button to begin. When you visit our Login page the second time or later, enter your email address and password to login.
My Page
At the “My Page”, you need to click on the “Application Form” button for the Doctoral Program.
On the page, you can edit your login information or reset password.
Application Form
There are four sections in the Application Form.

  1. Applicant’s Information
  2. Course Information/ Preferences
  3. Eligibility
  4. Educational Background

Each section will be saved when you click on “Proceed” button on each confirmation page. After saving, you can continue from where you left off when you login back.

On “1. Applicant’s Information,” upload your ID photo in JPEG format.

On “3. Eligibility,” describe your Study plan, Background and Future Career Plan, and Short Essay within 1,000 words each in English.

On “4. Educational Background,” applicants who have graduated from a university outside Japan are required to upload their degree certificate in JPEG format, which is one of the documents to be submitted. (Since each country has different education systems, we need to confirm their eligibility for application.)

Submission
You can submit your application by clicking “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click on the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the University, and you will not be able to go back to edit. Make sure to double-check before proceeding.
Print Generated PDF Documents
After clicking on the “Submit to Apply” button, “Reference Card” and “Address Sheet” will be generated in PDF for printing.

Web Entry

Submission of Certificates and Supporting Documents
Submit originals of all required certificates and supporting documents to the T-LSI Office by postal mail. Your documents need to be received by July 18, 2017.

First screening
We will determine the students to be admitted by evaluating the submitted documents.
Announcement of Result for First Screening
Announcement of first screening result: July 25, 2017

On the same day, T-LSI office will send you a notification of result for first screening and will let you know the venue for the second screening.

Payment

Applicants who have passed the first screening must pay the examination fee and the University can accept:

  1. online credit card payment for both domestic and overseas applicants
  2. convenience store payment for domestic applicants only.

*The MEXT scholarship students are exempted from paying the fees.

2. Eligibility for Application

3. Web Entry and Supporting Documents to be Submitted

With our Web Entry system, you can submit the application online. Read this section carefully before applying online. The first screening is conducted on both the information of web Entry and the documents to be posted.

1. Applicant’s Information All applicants Follow the instruction on the Web Entry system.
You are requested to upload the JPEG data of your ID photo for the Reference Card. The ID photo must be taken within three months with no hats.
2. Course Information/ Preferences All applicants Follow the instructions on the Web Entry system.
TOEIC/ TOEFL Score/ IELTS Score All applicants except for those whose first language is English Read the following and check the appropriate box indicated on the Web Entry system:
Submit the original of TOEIC Official Score Certificate with photo identification, TOEFL-PBT or iBT Examinee’s Score Record with photo identification, or IELTS (Academic Module) Official Test Report Form with photo identification of either of the examination you took in or after July of 2015.
Upload the original of TOEIC Official Score Certificate with photo identification, TOEFL Examinee’s Score Record with photo identification, or IELTS (Academic Module) Official Test Report Form with photo identification in JPEG format when proceeding with the Web Entry system.
The originals without photo identification, a photocopy of the originals, the original of TOEIC Institutional Program (IP) Score Report, or TOEFL Institutional Test Program (ITP) Score Record or score report of the IETLS General Training Module will NOT be accepted.
When English is your first language (see this file), the submission of the original of either of the examinations is not required.

1. Documents to be sent by email directly from the department dean or the supervisor.

Documents Required for Remarks
Letter of Recommendation All applicants A recommendation letter of the department dean or the supervisor, from which the applicant graduated/is expected to graduate, should be sent to the admission office. The recommendation letter must be written on A4/letter-size paper with the department-letter-head printed and with the signature of the recommender. The letter should be converted to a PDF file and must be sent to the T-LSI Office by the recommender directly by email.

2. Documents to be sent from the applicant

(The original copies need to be posted to us by airmail).

(Expected) Graduation Certificate (See the note) All applicants Submit a certificate of (expected) completion issued by a university (generally the graduate school (university) from which you have earned your master’s degree) which meets the application requirements for the doctoral program of the University of Tsukuba Graduate School.
Degree Certificate Those who graduated from other educational institution or a university outside Japan Submit a document/documents which will certify that you earned (are expected to earn) a master’s degree from a university or another educational institution.
The document(s) must;
– be issued by the institution
– include the name of the degree(s) conferred/ expected to be conferred by the institution and the date of conferral.
Upload a JPEG file to the Web Entry system and then post certified true copy(ies) to us by express mail. The document(s) must be written in English.
Academic Transcript All applicants Submit an academic transcript (the official transcript of programs record) issued by universities or other educational institutions where you have earned/are expected to earn your master’s degree. If any credits were transferred from another school, submit an academic transcript from that school. (All documents must be in English or in Japanese.)
Post an original copy to us by express mail.
Letter of Approval for Taking the Examination
(Format of your choice)
Applicants who meet the following conditions 1. Individuals who currently attend a university or graduate school (except those who will graduate or complete in March 2018) are required to submit a letter of approval for taking the examination issued by the head of their university (or department). (Format of your choice, A4 size)
2. Individuals who currently work for a government agency, school, or company (except part-time workers) are required to submit a letter of approval for taking the examination issued by their supervisor or a declaration written by the applicants themselves. (Format of your choice, A4 size)
Certificate of Government-Sponsored International Student
(Format of your choice)
International applicants who meet the following conditions Government-sponsored international students enrolled in another university are required to submit a certificate of government-sponsored international student issued by the university.

(Note) If your current name differs from that on any of your certificates due to marriage or other reasons, enclose an extract of your family register (photocopy is acceptable) or relevant certificate of individual items in your family register.

Notes:Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used not only for affairs concerning admission and screening, but also research and study aimed at improvement of the admission procedure and the university education. We will carefully take care of the data not to be disclosed as a specific person. Also, we will use the data to screen students for scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.

4. Examination Fee

Applicants who passed the first screening must pay the examination fee.
30,000 Japanese Yen (non-refundable)
*The examination fees are exempted for those who are the Government-Sponsored (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho scholarship) foreign students and who continue to doctoral program after completing our master’s program in March 2018.

Credit Card Payment: Visa, MasterCard, JCB, AMERICAN EXPRESS can be accepted.
You can make a payment by using your credit card at the last stage of the Web Entry system or at the following website:

After the payment, you will be provided with the receipt number so enter the number into the box on the Web Entry system.
Administration fees need to be covered by the applicant.

Convenience Store Payment: Payment can be made at LAWSON, Seven-Eleven, Familymart, CircleKSunkus, or MINISTOP.
To pay your fees at a convenience store, follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system or at the following website:

At the time you apply for Convenience Store Payment online, you will be given an 11-digit or a 13-digit application number. The number is required when you make the payment at the convenience store.

After the payment, enter the name of the convenience store where you made the payment, the date of payment, and the application number into the boxes on the Web Entry system.

5. Application Procedure

  1. 1.Visit our Web Entry system to apply. The Web Entry system will be available from June 16 – July 18, 2017.
  2. 2.Some of the documents have to be mailed to the Office of Master’s/Doctoral Program in Life Science Innovation by express mail. Your documents need to be received by July 18, 2017. Original documents submitted will be returned to you after the examination. When you submit your application online, the system will ask you to create the Address Sheet. Print out the sheet created and attach it to the envelope when sending the required documents to us.

7. Announcement of Acceptance and Enrollment Procedure

Announcement of Acceptance

The examinee numbers of successful applicants will be posted on our website on September 15, 2017. Acceptance notification will be sent to the successful applicants by email.

Enrollment Procedure

  1. 1.Enrollment Procedure Guidelines (which contain documents to be submitted before entrance) will be sent out to successful applicants around the middle of February 2018.
    Follow the direction in the Guidelines.
    (Note)
    The successful applicants are expected to notify us before the date above if they change their postal address.
  2. 2.The deadline of Enrollment Procedure
    You must send your documents with a specified envelop due at the beginning of March 2018. Follow the direction in the Guidelines.
  3. 3.Expenses Required upon Entrance
    • (a) Entrance fees are 282,000 Japanese Yen (non-refundable).
    • (b) Tuition: The tuition for the first semester of the 2018 academic year (April – September) is 267,900 Japanese Yen. The tuition for the second semester (October – March) is 267,900 Japanese Yen. (Yearly Amount: 535,800 Japanese Yen)
      (Note)
      (1)If fees are revised before entrance or while enrolled in this Graduate School, the revised tuition fees will be applied.
      (2)The entrance fees are exempted for those who are the Government-Sponsored (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho scholarship) foreign students or who completes our master’s in March 2018 and continues to take our doctoral program.
  4. 4. All applicants with a job (except part-time) need a document or a letter (ex; an order for a training course, a letter of leave of absence or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that you are available to complete the program.
  5. 5.International applicants must acquire a Status of Residence suitable for entrance to a graduate school, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951), before beginning enrollment procedures. Those who wish to enter this program as an international student must acquire Status of Residence as a “Student.”
    The documents to apply a Status of Residence suitable for entrance will be sent by SIGMA.
