Candidates for admission will be selected on the basis of comprehensive assessment of the documents submitted and the examination results.

- Regarding the foreign language subject, write your choice of foreign language(s) in the form titled “Information Sheet”.
- You will be notified of the time schedule for your oral examination when you take the written examination.
- You are not allowed to use a dictionary of any kind in the written examination.
- For the Specialized Subject essay exam, applicants who choose Language and Information Studies may use only Japanese. Applicants who choose Modern Culture Studies may use either Japanese or English, German or French.
- The oral examination for all applicants who choose Language and Information Studies is conducted in Japanese.

- You cannot select your mother tongue (first language). Also, dictionary use is not allowed during the exam.
- If you are an international student applying for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select Japanese for the Foreign Language exam. If you are a Japanese student applying for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select English for the Foreign Language exam.
- In addition to Japanese and English, the following languages are available: Chinese, Korean, German, French, and Russian. If you wish to select one of these languages, you must submit an additional document (maximum 1,200 characters in Japanese or 400 words in English) explaining the relationship between your research plan and language you wish to select. This document must be submitted to doctoral program office no later than 7 days prior to the deadline of applications. If you select one of these languages without submitting the required document in advance, your application will not be accepted. - Select one of the Specialized Subjects (questions) at the time of exam and answer in either Japanese or English. However, if you apply for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select either Linguistic or Japanese Language Education, and you must answer in Japanese.
- You must select one out of following degree programs at the time of application: Global Multidisciplinary Studies, International Japanese Social Studies, International Japanese Humanities, and Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy.

- Applicants CANNOT select their mother language (first language) as their chosen foreign language. Applicants CANNOT use dictionaries during this examination. If the following languages―Chinese, Russian, Spanish, or Portuguese―are highly relevant to the applicant’s research theme which they plan to study in our program, applicants can select one of these languages as their chosen language for the foreign-language examination.
If applicants want to designate one of the languages noted above, they must inform the Master’s Program in International Area Studies office by September 5, 2019 by providing a statement (within 1200 letters in Japanese or 400 words in English) explaining the relationship between their chosen research area (course), research plan, and designated foreign language. Please note that this statement must arrive by the above noted date. If applicants select a foreign language other than English or Japanese in their applications without sending such statement beforehand, it will not be accepted. If applicants have any questions or need further information, please consult with our office. - The oral examination interview schedule for each applicants will be distributed after the Foreign-language examination finishes on the first day.
