6. Screening Criteria
Candidates for admission will be selected on the basis of comprehensive assessment of the documents submitted and the examination results.

- You cannot select your mother tongue (first language). Also, dictionary use is not allowed during the exam.
- If you are an international student applying for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select Japanese for the Foreign Language exam. If you are a Japanese student applying for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select English for the Foreign Language exam.
- In addition to Japanese and English, the following languages are available: Chinese, Korean, German, French, and Russian. If you wish to select one of these languages, you must submit an additional document (maximum 1,200 characters in Japanese or 400 words in English) explaining the relationship between your research and the language you wish to select. This document must be submitted to the doctoral program office no later than 7 days prior to the deadline for applications. If you select one of these languages without submitting the required document in advance, your application will not be accepted. - Select one of the Specialized Subjects (questions) at the time of the exam and answer in either Japanese or English. However, if you apply for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select either Linguistic or Japanese Language Education, and answer in Japanese.
- You must select one out of following degree Programs at the time of application: Global Multidisciplinary Studies, International Japanese Social Studies, International Japanese Humanities, or Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy.
