3. Web Entry and Supporting Documents to be Submitted

With our Web Entry system, you can submit the application online. Read this section carefully before applying online.

Information You Need for Web Entry

Information Required for Remarks
1. Applicant’s Information All applicants Follow the instructions on the Web Entry system.
You are requested to upload the JPEG data of your ID photo for the Reference Card. The ID photo must be taken within three months with no hats or other head adornments.
2. Supervisor of Your Choice All applicants Follow the instructions on the Web Entry system.
Score of TOEIC/ TOEFL/ IELTS Academic Applicants except those exempted as given in the notes below the table* Enter the score and date of the examination taken after May 2017.
Submit either the Official Score Certificate/Report (TOEIC), Examinee Score Report (TOEFL), or Test Report Form (IELTS Academic).
3. Eligibility All applicants Follow the instructions on the Web Entry system.
Research Plan All applicants Summarize plans for your intended research activities at this program within 500 words in English or 1,000 characters in Japanese.
Your research plan will mainly be assessed according to the following four criteria that examine to what extent you have;

  1. expertise and presentation skills appropriate for Empowerment Informatics
  2. fundamental skills for interdisciplinary research
  3. the ability to investigate issues from multiple perspectives
  4. the potentiality to play active roles in an international society
Career Plan All applicants Summarize plans for your career after completing this program within 500 words in English or 1,000 characters in Japanese.
Your career plan will mainly be assessed according to the following three criteria that examine to what extent you have;

  1. the qualities needed to take an initiative as a global leader
  2. the potentiality to develop and pass on technology that matches the needs of the future society
  3. the abilities to tackle and resolve complicated social issues
4. Educational Background All applicants Follow the instructions on the Web Entry system. Upload the JPEG data of your graduation/degree certificate before submitting an original copy if you have earned or are expecting to earn your degree at the university or another type of educational institution outside Japan.
Research Activities All applicants who have research history
Employment Record All applicants who have employment history
5. Examination Fee
(Refer to “4. Examination Fee”.)
All applicants Follow the instructions given at the last page of the Web Entry system and pay your fee.
The following payment methods are available.
Credit Card (for all applicants):
Pay your fee online. After the payment, enter the receipt number on the Web Entry system.
Convenience Store (for domestic applicants only):
Pay your fee at a convenience store in Japan. After the payment, enter the name of the convenience store that you used, the date of payment, and the number given by the store on the Web Entry system.

* Applicants eligible for an exemption from TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS Academic score requirements include;
1) those whose first or native language is English
2) those from a country where English is an official language
3) those who completed their undergraduate course fully conducted in English.
If you fall under one of the above categories and wish to request this exemption, submit a letter that briefly summarizes your own linguistic background to support your request.

Confirmation Form All applicants The University of Tsukuba plans to implement organizational restructuring of graduate schools and programs in AY 2020. Submit the Confirmation Form after confirming the outline of the organizational restructuring plan on the university’s website .

Letter of Recommendation or Letter of Self-Recommendation

Applicants who apply for Admission on Recommendation in July Submit the letter issued by the president or dean in a sealed envelope.
However, if you cannot submit the Letter of Recommendation, please submit the Letter of Self-Recommendation prepared by yourself.
TOEIC Official Score Certificate/Record, TOEFL Examinee Score Report, IELTS Academic Test Report Form Applicants except those exempted as given in the notes below the table* Submit either the Official Score Certificate/Report (TOEIC), Examinee Score Report (TOEFL), or Test Report Form (IELTS Academic) of the examination taken after May 2017.
If the score is not submitted properly, you will be excluded from further selection.
We will not accept a photocopy of the Official Score Certificate, TOEIC Institutional Program Score Report, or TOEFL Institutional Test Score Record.
Any question arising out of, or in connection with, this Official Score Certificate, will be referred to the issuing office.

Request Letter for Exemption from TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS Academic Score Requirements If applicable (Check the notes below the table*) If you wish to request the exemption from TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS Academic score requirements, submit a letter that briefly summarizes your own linguistic background to support your request. Any format is acceptable.
Graduation Certificate**

Degree Certificate**
All applicants Submit a document to prove that you graduated (are expected to graduate) from a university or another type of educational institution and earned (are expecting to earn) a bachelor’s degree.
The document must;

  1. be issued by the institution
  2. include the name of the degree conferred (expected to be conferred) and the date of conferral.

For applicants whose degree was awarded in Japan:
The document must be written in Japanese.

For applicants whose degree was awarded outside Japan:
The document must be written in English.

Academic Transcript** All applicants Submit an academic transcript (the official transcript of programs record) issued by your university or another educational institution that meets the application requirements for Ph.D. Program in Empowerment Informatics. If any credits were transferred from another school, submit an academic transcript from that school. If you have completed or will complete a graduate school, submit an academic transcript (the original transcript of program record) issued by the graduate school, too. (All documents must be written in English or Japanese.)
Letter of Approval for Entrance Exam (Form of Your Selection) If applicable
  1. 1.Individuals who currently attend a university or graduate school (except those who are expected to graduate by March 2020) need to submit a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by the head of their university or graduate school (or the head of their department). Any format is acceptable.
  2. 2.Individuals who currently work for a government agency, school, or company (except for part-time workers) need to submit a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by their superior. Any format is acceptable.
Certificate of Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship Foreign Student If applicable If you are enrolled at another university at the time of application, submit the certificate of Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship foreign student issued by the university.

* Applicants eligible for an exemption from TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS Academic score requirements include;
1) those whose first or native language is English
2) those from a country where English is an official language
3) those who completed their undergraduate course fully conducted in English.

** In the case that your current name is different from that on the documents you submit (for example, because of marriage), submit with the proof (e.g., copy of marriage license).

Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used only for affairs concerning admission and screening, and as part of the materials to be used for screening students for tuition exemption or scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.

Print out the Reference Card with your ID photo and bring a copy of the card to the venue with you on your examination day.
Address Sheet All applicants Attach the sheet to your envelope when you post the required documents to us.
