- If you are a foreign student, you must select Japanese in the First Foreign Language Examination.
- You CANNOT select your mother language (first language) as your choice for the Second Foreign Language Examination.
- Only one dictionary can be used in the Second Foreign Language Examination.

| History and Anthropology | (History Major) Select one specialized subject from Japanese History, Oriental History, Western History, or Historical Geography. This is an examination to test your knowledge about specialized field. (Anthropology Major) |
(History Major) Japanese History Subscribe to Historical Materials. Oriental History is (1) reading of historical materials and (2) reading English literature. Western History ① Reading materials and ② Reading foreign literature (select one from English, German, French, or Hebrew). Historical geography is a subscription to historical materials (including reading figures). All dictionaries can not be used in History Major. (Anthropology Major) |

- Please select a specialized subject in your research field.
- The “mother tongue (first language)” of the foreign language test means your most proficient language in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. In other words, the language which you received your education with and have a good command of for expressing your opinion, thought, emotion, etc.

- Regarding the foreign language subject, write down the foreign language(s) that you select in the form called Information Sheet.
- You will be notified of the time schedule of your oral examination when you take the written examination.
- You are not allowed to use any dictionary in the written examination..
- The foreign language examination will examine whether your linguistic ability meets the level required to perform research.
- For all applicants for admission to Language and Information Studies, the oral examination is conducted in Japanese.

- You cannot select your mother tongue (first language). Dictionary use is not allowed at the exam.
- If you are an international student and apply for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select Japanese in the Foreign Language Exam. If you are a Japanese student and apply for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select English in the Foreign Language Exam.
- Apart from Japanese and English, following languages are available: Chinese; Korean; German; French; and Russian. If you wish to select one of these languages, you must submit an additional document (approx. 1,200 letters in Japanese or approx. 400 words in English) which explains the relationship between the language you wish to select and your research proposal. The document should reach the doctoral program office 7 days prior to the deadline of the examination application. For more details, see http://japan.tsukuba.ac.jp.
- Select one of the Specialized Subjects at the exam. If you apply for the Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy Program, you must select either Linguistic or Japanese Language Education, and answer in Japanese.
- You must select one out of following 4 Programs at the time of application: Global Multidisciplinary Studies; International Japanese Social Studies; International Japanese Humanities; and Japanese Language and Japanese Language Pedagogy
