3. Web Entry and Documents to be Submitted

You must submit the application online via our Web Entry system. Read this section carefully before applying.
Please print the PDF files that are generated after completing your application. Please paste original copies of the documents listed below on to the printed form and submit by registered mail.

You must obtain the informal consent of faculty member who will be your academic advisor after admission. Please refer https://informatics.tsukuba.ac.jp/en/academic-staff-en/.

Required information for Web Entry

1. Applicant’s Information / Program of Your Choice All applicants You are required to upload the JPEG file (500KB or smaller) of your photo for the Reference Card. The photo must be taken within three months with no hats, masks or other head adornments.

Research Plan All applicants Summarize plans in Japanese in 2000 characters or English in 1000 words or less.
You may use the prescribed form downloadable from the Web Entry system only if it is essential for you to use mathematical formulae, Greek letters, or special symbols, which cannot be entered into the system. Fill it out and send it together with the other required documents by mail. The format of the form must not be changed. Any texts may not be written outside the box.
Research and Practice Overview All applicants Summarize your research overview in Japanese in 2000 characters or English in 1000 words or less.
All applicants describe either their research or work experiences.
You may use the prescribed form downloadable from the Web Entry system only if it is essential for you to use mathematical formulae, Greek letters, or special symbols, which cannot be entered into the system. Fill it out and send it together with the other required documents by mail. The format of the form must not be changed. Any texts may not be written outside the box.
List of Research Results All applicants Categorize your academic results into thesis, academic articles, conference presentations, patents, projects, etc. and number them serially in each category. Put circles at the beginning of the academic results you chose to submit as your major Research Results.

  1. (1) For the academic articles, fill in the author(s) including the co-author(s), the title, the name of the journal, the volume, the number, the year of publication and the first and last page numbers. If the article is written in language other than Japanese and English, please add the abstract for the article in Japanese or English.
  2. (2) For conference presentations, fill in the author(s) including the co-author(s), the title, the name of the conference and the date.
  3. (3) For project participating, fill in the name of the project, the term, outline and the charge of your work.
  4. (4) On the other categories, conform the style above.
4. Educational Background All applicants If you have graduated from a foreign university, please upload your degree certificate in JPEG format (3MB or smaller, and 2000×2000 pixels or smaller).

Examination Fee All applicants
(Excluding Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship student and those who continue to doctoral program after completing our master’s program in March, 2023 (for Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English, September, 2023).
Examination Fee is 30,000 JPY.
Follow the instructions given on the last page of the Web Entry system and pay your fee.
The following payment methods are available.
By Credit Card (recommended):
Pay your fee online. After the payment, enter the receipt number into the box on the Web Entry system.
At Convenience Store (only domestic applicants):
Pay your fee at a convenience store in Japan. After the payment, enter the information below into the box on the Web Entry system.

Please note that PDF files cannot be printed after the Web Entry System Application Period.
The original copies of the following documents need to be submitted to us by registered mail. All documents must be in English or in Japanese.

Applicants who graduated from a graduate school outside Japan Submit a graduation certificate for your master’s degree.
Academic Transcript All applicants Submit an academic transcript (the official transcript) issued by a university or another educational institution. If any credits were transferred from another school, submit an original academic transcript from the former school.
Letter of Recommendation Applicants of Special Selection Process for Recommended Applicants and Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English A Letter of Recommendation is required. There is no designated format for the recommendation. Please use A4/letter size paper. It must be signed.
Peer-reviewed academic paper Applicants who are applying through criteria (1) of the “Special Selection Process for Recommended Applicants” After submitting documents, you will receive an email with the subject “Submission Instruction of Research Results” from tosyoss-daigakuin@un.tsukuba.ac.jp. Follow the instructions and upload a single PDF file including your research paper.
Research Results Applicants who want to submit them After submitting documents, you will receive an email with the subject “Submission Instruction of Research Results” from tosyoss-daigakuin@un.tsukuba.ac.jp. Follow the instructions and upload a single PDF file including your research articles (not more than 5 items).
Research Plan Only applicants whose “Research Plan”, “Research and Practice Overview” includes mathematical formulae, Greek letters, or special symbols that cannot be entered in the Web Entry system Fill out your research plan, research and practice overview on the designated format in one page each and submit them.
The fixed format must not be changed. Any texts may not be written outside the box.
Research and Practice Overview
Receipt Portion (Certificate of Payment) of Examination Fee Statement Applicants who made a convenience store payment Detach the Receipt Portion (Certificate of Payment) from the Examination Fee Statement given at the convenience store and paste it onto the “Form for Submission of the Certificate of Payment of Application Fee”.
Copy of “Application Completed” Page of Examination Fee Payment by Credit Card Applicants who made a credit card payment Include a copy of the “Application Completed” page.
Letter of approval for Entrance Examination Applicable applicants
  1. (1) Applicants who currently attend a university or graduate school as a full-time student (except those who are expected to graduate by March, 2023, for Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English applicants, September, 2023) need a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by the head of their university or graduate school (or the head of their department).You can use any format for this document.
    If you cannot prepare an approval letter, a letter of your declaration stating that studying in graduate school will cause no problem to move university, is acceptable as an alternative. Your seal is necessary.
  2. (2) Applicants who currently work full-time need a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by your superior. You can use any format for this document.
    For applicants who will quit at the time of entry to graduate school or who cannot prepare a letter of your supervisor, a letter of your declaration stating that studying in graduate school will cause no harm to your work is acceptable as an alternative. Your seal is necessary.
Certificate of Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship student Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship student who are enrolled in another university in Japan Submit a “Certificate of Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship student” issued by the university that you are currently enrolled in.
Address Sheet All applicants Attach the address sheet to your envelope when you submit the required documents to us by registered mail.

*In case your current name is different from that on the documents you submit (e.g., because of marriage), submit with the proof (e.g., copy of your marriage license).

Prepare for the Examination

Reference Card All applicants Please print it out and bring it with you at the oral examination.

Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used not only for affairs concerning admission and screening, but also for research and study aimed at the improvement of the admission procedure and university education. We will carefully take care of the data not to disclose your personal identity. Also, we will use the data to screen students for scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.
