4. Examination Fee

Applicants must pay the examination fee.
30,000 Japanese Yen (nonrefundable)

Those applicants are required to contact to the Office of Doctoral Program in Human Biology before applying:

* The examination fees are exempted for the Government-Sponsored (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho scholarship) international students.

* University of Tsukuba have the special measures of examination fee exemption for the victims of disasters in Japan. For more details, please confirm this website.
This applies only to the victims of disasters in Japan.

Don’t forget to pay the examination fees during the following term.

  • August Selection Process: July 9, 2024 – July 22, 2024
  • January to February Selection Process: December 2, 2024 – December 12, 2024

Credit Card Payment: Visa, MasterCard, JCB, AMERICAN EXPRESS can be accepted.

You can make a payment by using your credit card at the last stage of the Web Entry system or at the following website:
https://e-shiharai.net/english/ (available in English only)
After the payment, you will be provided with the receipt number so enter the number into the box on the Web Entry system.
Also, click the “Application Results” button on the E-payment site (URL above), print out the inquiry result screen that appears, and submit it to the university together with the required documents.
Administration fees need to be covered by the applicant.

Convenience Store Payment: Payment can be made at LAWSON, Seven-Eleven, FamilyMart, or MINISTOP. (for domestic applicants only)

To pay your fees at a convenience store, follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system or at the following website:
https://e-shiharai.net/ (available in Japanese only)
At the time you apply for Convenience Store Payment online, you will be given an 11-digit or a 13-digit application number. The number is required when you make the payment at the convenience store.

After the payment, enter the name of the convenience store where you made the payment, the date of payment, and the application number into the boxes on the Web Entry system.

  1. Seven-Eleven: 13 digits
  2. LAWSON, FamilyMart, MINISTOP: 11 digits

Detach the Receipt Portion (Certificate of Payment) from your Examination Fee Statement given to you at the convenience store and affix it to the “Form for Submission of the Certificate of Payment of Application Fee”. You can create the form in PDF format and print it out from the Web Entry system. Submit it together with other required documents.
Administration fees need to be covered by the applicant.

5. Application Procedure

  1. Visit the Web Entry System to apply. Once you submit your application, you will not be able to make edits. Be sure to double-check before proceeding.
      【Application Period】

    • August Selection Process: July 9, 2024 (from 12 p.m. JST) – July 22, 2024 (by 3 p.m. JST)
    • January to February Selection Process: December 2, 2024 (from 12 p.m. JST) – December 12, 2024 (by 3 p.m. JST)
  2. Some of the documents must be posted by registered mail or submitted in person to the Office of Doctoral Program in Human Biology by the deadline. When you submit your application online, the system will ask you to create the Address Sheet. Print out the sheet created and attach it to the envelope when sending the required documents to us. If your documents are not received by the due date or the documents are not completed, you will not be able to take the exam.

6. Selection Process

Examination site: University of Tsukuba (Japan), Online (only for the applicants who live outside of Japan)

Entrance examinations will be held at the university’s examination venues.
However, the entrance exam will be conducted online for those who live overseas and wish to do so. Those who wish to take the exam online must submit the “Application form to take exam online” by the application deadline.
If you live in Japan and wish to take the exam online for some reasons like you are unable to come to the examination venues, please contact us by the application deadline.
Finally, if it turns difficult to come to the university due to unavoidable reasons after the application deadline, please contact us as soon as possible.
The schedule for the online examination will be announced to eligible applicants after the application deadline.

7. Announcement of Acceptance and Enrollment Procedure

(1)Announcement of Acceptance

  • August Selection Process: September 12, 2024 (10 a.m. JST)
  • January to February Selection Process: February 14, 2025 (10 a.m. JST)

The examinee number of the successful applicants will be posted on our website.
Letter of Acceptance letters will be issued online.
An email will be sent to the email address registered for the application from 10:00 a.m. (JST) on the day of acceptance announcement sequentially.
Please follow the instructions in that email to download Letter of Acceptance.
In some cases, additional admissions will be offered to applicants who took the entrance examination administered in January to February Selection Process. Applicants will be notified by phone (or e-mail in exceptional cases) by mid-March 2025 for April 2025 admissions and by early September 2025 for October 2025 admissions.

(2)Enrollment Procedure

  1. An enrollment packet (which contain documents to be submitted before entrance) will be sent to successful applicants.
      Date of dispatch: for entrants in April 2025
      Sent out in two instalments.

    • October 31 (Thu) 2024
      (Successful applicants for the August Selection Process)

      (Successful applicants for the January-February Selection Process)

  2. (Note)
    The successful applicants are expected to notify us in advance if they are moving permanently before the date above or going away when the documents are expected to be delivered.

  3. The documents should be mailed using a designated envelope (which will be sent to you together with the Enrollment Procedure Guidelines) by early March 2025 for entrants in April 2025, by late August for entrants in October2025. The deadline will be shown in Enrollment Procedure Guidelines.
  4. You will be offered the Financial Support from SIGMA, which would assist you to dedicate yourself to your study. To apply for the Financial Support, you need to complete the Research Plan form that will be sent via email by the SIGMA in advance.
    • April Entry: Early March
    • October Entry: Early September

    Necessary expenses

    1. (1)Admission Fees: 282,000 yen ※In case that the amount of Admission Fees would be revised at the time of your enrollment, the revised amount has to be paid.
    2. (2)Tuition Fees: 535,800 yen/year
      We provide tuition fee exemption for students. Please see the latest information here.
  5. All applicants with a full-time job (except part-time) need a document or a letter (ex; an order for a training course, a letter of leave of absence or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that you are available to complete the program.
  6. International applicants must acquire a Status of Residence suitable for entrance to a graduate school, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951), before beginning enrollment procedures. Those who wish to enter this program as an international student must acquire Status of Residence as a “Student.”
    The documents to apply a Status of Residence suitable for entrance will be sent later by SIGMA.

The following disclosure is made in relation to the performance of a candidate who was unsuccessful in the entrance examination for the Degree Programs in Comprehensive Human Sciences (Doctoral Program in Human Biology).

    Please send your request by postal mail, enclosing the following
    (1) Request Form for Disclosure of Admission Information
    (2) Examination Voucher (to be returned at the time of disclosure)

    (3) Reply envelope (long size #3) with your Name and Address written on it and a 460 yen stamp affixed.
    However, if you are an overseas resident, please inquire by E-mail to the Billing Office.
