3. Web Entry and Documents to be Submitted

With our Web Entry system, you must submit the application online. Read this section carefully before applying.
Please print PDF files to be generated after completing application. Please paste original copies of the documents listed below on to printed form and submit by registered mail.

Required information for Web Entry

Information Required for Remarks
1. Applicant’s Information / Program of Your Choice All applicants You are required to upload the JPEG file (500KB or smaller) of your ID photo for the Reference Card. The ID photo must be taken within three months with no hats, masks or other head adornments.
2. Supervisor of Your Choice All applicants Applicant of Special Selection of Global Individuals in English needs to contact and obtain confirmation from your prospective academic advisor.
Official Score Certificate/Report of TOEIC, Test Taker (Examinee) Score Report of TOEFL, or Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module) Applicants of General Admission and Special Selection of Global Individuals in English (Excluding applicants exempted) Submit one of the following as the score of foreign language.

  • TOEIC Listening & Reading Test Official Score Certificate: with photo printing
  • TOEIC Institutional Program (IP) Score Report
  • TOEFL iBT (Including TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition) Test taker (Examinee) Score Report: with photo printing, issued by ETS
  • TOEFL ITP Score Report (Level1)
  • Test Report Form of IELTS (Academic Module)

Test scores taken on and after July 2018 are certificated as valid.

If you cannot get the score during application period, fill in “Taken on (Year/Month): 2020 12; Your score: 0” on the web entry system.
(Exemption from English Proficiency Testing)
Applicants of Special Selection of Global Individuals in English, exempt applicants should select “Exemption”. Exemption requirements are written in Section 6.

3. Eligibility All applicants
Research Plan All applicants Summarize your research plans after enrollment (themes, contents, etc.) in English in 500 words or less.

(Special Selection of Global Individuals in English)
Please discuss the research plan (themes, contents, etc.) after enrollment with your prospective academic advisor who give you his/her consent to be your academic advisor.

(You may use the prescribed form downloadable from the Web Entry system only if it is essential for you to use mathematical formulae, Greek letters, or special symbols, which cannot be entered into the system. Fill it out and send it together with the other required documents by mail. The format of the form must not be changed. Any texts may not be written outside the box.)

4. Educational Background All applicants If you graduated from a university or another educational institution outside Japan, scan your (expected) degree certificate into JPEG (3MB or smaller, and 2000×2000 pixels or smaller) and upload the file at the Web Entry system.

Examination Fee is 30,000 JPY.
Follow the instructions given on the last page of the Web Entry system and pay your fee.

By Credit Card (recommended):
Pay your fee online. After the payment, enter the receipt number into the box on the Web Entry system.
At Convenience Store (only domestic applicants):
Pay your fee at a convenience store in Japan. After the payment, enter the information below into the box on the Web Entry system.

Please print the generated PDF file after application in A4 or Letter size. The original copies of the following documents need to be submitted to us by registered mail. All documents must be in English or in Japanese.

Note: Even if you have already earned a master’s or a doctoral degree, you need to submit a graduation certificate issued by the university from which you have earned a bachelor’s degree.

Academic Transcript* All applicants Submit an academic transcript (the official transcript of your programs history) issued by a university or another educational institution. If any credits were transferred from another school, submit an original academic transcript from the former school.
If you entered a graduate school, submit an academic transcript (the official transcript of programs record) issued by the graduate school, too.
Letter of Recommendation Applicants of Special Selection of Global Individuals in English A Letter of Recommendation from your academic advisor is required. You can use any format on this document.
Please use A4/letter size paper.

In case you do not submit the original copy on the attendance confirmation by examination dates, you will not be considered as an applicant for passing the entrance examination because you have missed the foreign language test.

Research Plan Only applicants whose “Research Plan” includes mathematical formulae, Greek letters, or special symbols that cannot be entered in the Web Entry system Fill out the research plan on the printed one page and submit it.
The fixed format of the form must not be changed. Any texts may not be written outside the box.
Receipt Portion (Certificate of Payment) of Examination Fee Statement Applicants who made a convenience store payment Detach the Receipt Portion (Certificate of Payment) from the Examination Fee Statement given at the convenience store and attached to a “Form for Submission of the Certificate of Payment of Application Fee”.
Copy of “Application Completed” Page of Examination Fee Payment by Credit Card Applicants who made a credit card payment Include a copy of the “Application Completed” page.
Letter of Approval for Entrance Examination (Form of Your Selection) Applicants who concerned
  1. (1) The letter must be submitted by mail.
    Individuals who is General Admission applicants and currently attend a university or graduate school as a full-time student (except those who are expected to graduate by March 2021, for Special Selection of Global Individuals in English applicants, September 2021) need a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by the head of their university or graduate school (or the head of their department).
    You can use any format on this document.
    If you cannot prepare an approval letter, a letter of your declaration stating that studying in graduate school cause no harm to your work, is acceptable as an alternative. Your seal is necessary.

  2. (2) Individuals who currently working in full-time need a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by your supervisor. You can use any format on this document.
    For applicants who will quit at the time of entry to Graduate School or who cannot prepare a letter of your supervisor, a letter of your declaration stating that studying in graduate school cause no harm to your work is acceptable as an alternative. Applicants who will quit at the time of entrance will need a certificate of retirement at the entrance.
Certificate of Government-Sponsored Foreign Student Applicants who enrolled in the other university in Japan The certificate of the government-sponsored (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho Scholarship) foreign student who enrolled in the other university at the time of application must need this certificate issued by the university.
Address Sheet All applicants Attach the address sheet to your envelope when you submit the required documents to us by registered mail.
Official verification from the university that English is the SOLE language of instruction Applicants of Special Selection of Global Individuals in English who concerned Individuals who have received or will receive a degree from an accredited university where English is the SOLE language of instruction must submit official verification from the university that English is the SOLE language of instruction along with your anticipated date of graduation.

*In case your current name is different from that on the documents you submit (e.g., because of marriage), submit with the proof (e.g., copy of your marriage license).

Attach an original copy of TOEIC, TOEFL or IELTS score to this form and submit it.
If you fail to submit until the day of examination, you will be absent from Foreign Language test, and never pass the examination.

Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used not only for affairs concerning admission and screening, but also research and study aimed at improvement of the admission procedure and the university education. We will carefully take care of the data not to be disclosed as a specific person. Also, we will use the data to screen students for scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.
