15. Dual Degree Program in Degree Programs in Pure and Applied Sciences

Dual degree program is structured so that researchers or students in doctoral programs can pursue graduate work in two fields. This program aims to raise highly talented people who have expertise, great erudition, and high adaptability.

That is, students in doctoral program will also belong to master’s program, or professional degree program (except for Degree Programs in Business Sciences, University of Tsukuba Law School) and fulfill the requirement of two degrees.

Now these fields are available for dual degree program:

Primary Program in Doctoral Program Secondary Program in Master’s Program
Physics Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering, Master’s Program in Computer Science
Engineering Sciences Subprogram in Materials Science Degree Programs in Comprehensive Human Sciences
Master’s Program in Medical Sciences

It is not easy to get two degrees at the same time. You need to ask your prospective supervisor for advice before you apply and contemplate. When you apply, get an application document and get a signature of the prospected supervisor to the document. Then submit it to Academic Service Office for the Pure and Applied Sciences Area by the deadline of assessment of eligibility for application.

When you pass the assessment, a written permission to take dual degree program will be given. Submit a copy of the written permission to Graduate Admissions, Division of Admission, Department of Educational Promotion, along with application documents.

(If you apply for both Doctoral program and Master’s program, attach the copy to each application documents.) By submitting the copy, examination fee for Master’s program will be exempted.

To apply the dual degree program, it is necessary to pass the exam and do the procedure for enrollment. If you apply for both Master’s program and Doctoral program at the same time and you fail to pass the exam of the Doctoral program, it is considered that you also fail to pass the Master’s program.

When you pass the exam, the enrollment fee and tuition fee (during the period of dual degree program) of first semester will be exempted.
