(A) No Eligibility Screening is Required for the following individuals:
  • Individuals who have graduated or are expecting to graduate from, a Japanese four-year university by March 2021
  • Individuals who have graduated or are expecting to graduate from a university outside Japan that implements 16 or more years of school curriculum up to graduation of university by March 2021
  • Individuals who have earned or are expecting to earn a degree equivalent to bachelor’s degree in a three-year (or more) program from universities outside Japan
  • Others

(B) Eligibility Screening is Required for the following individuals:
  • Individuals who have graduated or are expecting to graduate from, a junior college, an upper secondary school, a vocational school or similar school
  • Individuals who have graduated or are expecting to graduate from a university of a foreign country that implements 15-year School Curriculum up to graduation of university
  • Others

Recommendation Requirements
Individuals who are qualified to apply to the Doctoral Program in Empowerment Informatics must meet one of the requirements claimed by EMP, being recommended by either the president, the dean, the chair to the applicant’s institution or themselves, and commit to enroll once admitted.

Before you apply, you have to contact a prospective supervisor (a faculty member from whom you wish to receive academic instruction) and obtain his/her consent to your application in advance.

Assessment of Eligibility for Application

Individuals who are expected to undergo the Eligibility Screening should contact the Academic Service Office for the System and Information Engineering in advance.
Email us to obtain necessary documents for the assessment and email them back by the deadlines stated below. If you are deemed eligible for admission, you will be given a passcode needed on the “Educational Background” page of our Web Entry system.
(*The individuals who have ever applied for the Eligibility Screening and been deemed eligible by the screening, should also apply for the screening again.)

Web Entry

You can apply to the University of Tsukuba through the Web Entry system. Read the guideline carefully before applying.
Submission must be made during the terms stated below.

  • For Admission on Recommendation in September: July 21, 2020 (from noon JST) – July 30, 2020 (by 3 p.m. JST)
  • For General Admission in October: September 1, 2020 (from noon JST) – September 18, 2020 (by 3 p.m. JST)
  • For General Admission in February: December 1, 2020 (from noon JST) – December 18, 2020 (by 3 p.m. JST)
Sign Up

First, you will need your own account to log in. Once you make an account, you may save the data you entered and log back in later to continue.

Activation

When you sign up, activation email will be sent to your email address registered. Click the activation URL on the email to activate your account.

Login

For the first time after the activation, you’re already logged in. Just click on “Login” button to begin. When you visit our Login page the second time or later, enter your email address and password to log in.

My Page

At the “My Page”, you need to click on the “Application Form” button for the Doctoral Program in Empowerment Informatics.
On the page, you can edit your login information or reset password.

Application Form

There are four sections in the Application Form:

  1. Applicant’s Information
  2. Supervisor of Your Choice
  3. Eligibility
  4. Educational Background

Each section will be saved when you click on “Proceed to ***” button on each confirmation page. After saving, you can continue from where you left off when you login back.
Upload the JPEG data of your ID photo in “1. Applicant’s Information” section and the JPEG data of your degree certificate in “4. Educational Background” section. Use one-byte alphabets and numbers to enter all the information.

Payment

You must pay the examination fee before submitting your application. The University can accept:

  1. online credit card payment for both domestic and overseas applicants
  2. convenience store payment for domestic applicants only.

(*The examination fee is exempted for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship foreign students.)

Credit Card Payment: Follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system and pay by credit card. After the payment, you will be notified of the receipt number. Enter the number into the “Receipt Number” box and click on “Submit” button to proceed. Convenience Store Payment: Follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system and pay at a convenience store in Japan. When you apply for ‘Convenience Store Payment’ online, you will receive the Examination Fee Statement with an 11-digit or a 13-digit code. After the payment, enter the code and payment data on the Web Entry system and click on “Submit” button to proceed.

Submission

After the payment is confirmed, you can submit your application by clicking “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click on the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the University, and you will not be able to go back to edit. Make sure to double-check before proceeding.
After you submit your application, a confirmation email will be sent to the email address that you registered. Be sure to check it.

(*Check and adjust spam filter settings in your email account beforehand so that you can receive an email from the “entry.ap-graduate.tsukuba.ac.jp” domain.)

Create PDF

After submitting, PDF documents will be downloaded. For treatment of the documents, follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry and be sure to download the PDF documents. You can download them from the Web Entry system during the terms stated below.

  • For Admission on Recommendation in September: July 21, 2020 (from noon JST) – July 30, 2020 (by 3 p.m. JST)
  • For General Admission in October: September 1, 2020(from noon JST) – September 18, 2020 (by 3 p.m. JST)
  • For General Admission in February: December 1, 2020 (from noon JST) – December 18, 2020 (by 3 p.m. JST)

Original copies of the documents given in “7. Web Entry and Supporting Documents to be Submitted” section need to be received by express mail no later than the deadlines stated below.
Your application will not be accepted unless all required materials are received by the following dates.
