Security Export Control

The University of Tsukuba has established the University of Tsukuba Rules on Security Export Control in accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act (FEFTA), and conducts strict examinations for acceptance of international students etc. International applicants who fall under any of the conditions set out in said regulations may be unable to enter their desired program.

Application Form

There are four sections in the Application Form:

  1. Applicants’ Information
  2. 2. English Proficiency
  3. Eligibility
  4. Educational Background

Fields marked with “Required” in each section are required. It will be saved when you click on “Proceed” button on each confirmation page. After saving, you can continue from where you left off when you login again.

On “1. Applicant’s Information,” upload your ID photo in JPEG format (the file size must be less than 500KB, 2,000pixel).
On “3. Eligibility” write a proposal with about 1,000 English words for interdisciplinary research with another field of study under this Program. Oral Examination 2 will be based on this proposal. Also please state two fields and two mentors you are interested in. You should choose a field and a mentor of 1) Life and Medical Sciences / 2) Science, Engineering and Informatics, respectively. You are required to make preliminary contacts with them. Research fields available in the program are shown on the listing of faculty “Mentors” on the program website.
On “4. Educational Background,” applicants who have graduated from a university outside Japan are required to upload their degree certificate in JPEG format, which is one of the documents to be submitted. (Since each country has different education systems, we need to confirm their eligibility for application.)

Payment

You must pay the examination fee before submitting your application. The University accepts:

  1. Online credit card payments for both domestic and overseas applicants
  2. Convenience store payments for domestic applicants only

Submission

You can submit your application by clicking “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click on the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the University, and you will not be able to go back to edit. Make sure to double-check before proceeding.

After you submit your application, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to the registered e-mail address. Be sure to check it.

All applicants with a full-time job (except part-time) need a document or a letter (ex; an order for a training course, a letter of leave of absence or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that you are available to complete the program.
The successful applicants are expected to notify us in advance if they are moving permanently before the date above or going away when the documents are expected to be delivered.

Procedure for Enrollment

The documents should be posted by registered mail using a designated envelop (which will be sent to you together with the Enrollment Procedure Guidelines) by early March 2025 for entrants in April 2025, by late August for entrants in October 2025. The recommendation letter must be written on A4/letter-size paper with the department-letter-head printed and with the signature of the recommender. The letter must be posted by the recommender directly to the admission office by registered mail.

Important Notice: An applicant who do not have TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS score must include an evaluation of the applicant’s English proficiency.

(Special Selection Process for Working Individuals) A recommendation letter (from Company) should be written by your boss or supervisor.
The letter should include:

Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the applicants’ documents, will be used for affairs concerning admission and screening, or may be used to improve the way of admission and university education keeping each identity confidential. Also, they will be used as part of the materials for screening students for tuition exemption or scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.

* The examination fees are exempted for the Government-Sponsored (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho scholarship) international students.

* University of Tsukuba have the special measures of examination fee exemption for the victims of disasters in Japan. For more details, please confirm this website.
This applies only to the victims of disasters in Japan.

Don’t forget to pay the examination fees during the following term.

Convenience Store Payment: Payment can be made at LAWSON, Seven-Eleven, FamilyMart, or MINISTOP. (for domestic applicants only)

At the time you apply for Convenience Store Payment online, you will be given an 11-digit or a 13-digit application number. The number is required when you make the payment at the convenience store.

  2. Some of the documents have to be posted by registered mail or submitted in person to the Office of Ph.D. Program in Humanics by the deadline. When you submit your application online, the system will ask you to create the Address Sheet. Print out the sheet created and attach it to the envelope when sending the required documents to us. If your documents are not received by the due date or the documents are not completed, you will not be able to take the exam.

7. Announcement of Acceptance and Enrollment Procedure

(1) Announcement of Acceptance

  • August Selection Process: September 12, 2024 (10 a.m. JST)
  • January to February Selection Process: February 14, 2025 (10 a.m. JST)

The examinee number of the successful applicants will be posted on our website.
Letter of Acceptance letters will be issued online.
An email will be sent to the email address registered for the application from 10:00 a.m. (JST) on the day of acceptance announcement sequentially.
Please follow the instructions in that email to download Letter of Acceptance.

(2) Enrollment Procedure

  1. Enrollment Procedure Guidelines (which include documents to be submitted before entrance) will be sent out to successful applicants.
      Date of dispatch: for entrants in April 2025
      Sent out in two instalments.

    (Note)
    The successful applicants need to notify us in advance if they are moving permanently before the shipping date or going away when the documents are expected to be delivered.

  2. The deadline of Enrollment Procedure
    The documents should be posted by registered mail using a designated envelop (which will be sent to you together with the Enrollment Procedure Guidelines) by early March 2025 for entrants in April 2025, by late August for entrants in October 2025. The deadline will be shown in Enrollment Procedure Guidelines.
  3. Necessary Expenses
    1. (1)Admission Fees: 282,000 yen ※In case that the amount of Admission Fees would be revised at the time of your enrollment, the revised amount has to be paid.
    2. (2)Tuition Fees: 535,800 yen
  4. All applicants with a full-time job (except part-time) need a document or a letter (ex; an order for a training course, a letter of leave of absence or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that you are available to complete the program.
  5. International applicants must acquire a Status of Residence suitable for entrance to a graduate school, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951), before beginning enrollment procedures. Those who wish to enter this program as an international student must acquire Status of Residence as a “Student.”
    The documents to apply a Status of Residence suitable for entrance will be sent later by SIGMA.

The following disclosure is made in relation to the performance of a candidate who was unsuccessful in the entrance examination for the Ph.D. Program in Humanics.

    Please send your request by postal mail, enclosing the following
    (1) Request Form for Disclosure of Admission Information
    (2) Examination Voucher (to be returned at the time of disclosure)

    (3) Reply envelope (long size #3) with your Name and Address written on it and a 460 yen stamp affixed.
    However, if you are an overseas resident, please inquire by E-mail to the Billing Office.
