Due to the Impact of the COVID-19 Infection, etc.

The University of Tsukuba Graduate School Entrance Examination for the academic year 2023 is announced as “Entrance Examination on the University Campus” in principle. Some programs may shift to online entrance examinations. In addition, we plan to set up supplementary examinations (online, etc.) for applicants who are unable to come to the University due to the effects of the COVID-19 infection, etc.

※Conditions for coming to the examination center and the setting of supplementary examinations will be announced on this website approximately one month prior to the examination date, based on the status of the spread of the COVID-19 infection, etc. Please be sure to check the announcement column on the Application Guidelines website.

Information environment and other requirements for taking the online entrance examination

The following preparations and arrangements are required on the examinations are to be held online.

  1. Have a bright quiet private room environment
  2. Have a network environment capable of sending and receiving video
  3. Have a personal computer with a camera and microphone
    (using a speaker for voice output. The use of earphones or headphones, etc., that are fitted to the body are prohibited)
  4. Have a smartphone (with a camera) * Item 4 on the left is for emergency use in case of occurrence of network problems

Assessment of Eligibility for Application

Individuals who are expected to undergo the Eligibility Screening should contact the Academic Service Office for the Library, Information and Media Science Area in advance.
Submit the documents for the assessment by e-mail or mail. If you are deemed eligible for admission, you will be given a passcode required for the “Educational Background” page of the Web Entry system.

There are four sections in the Application Form:

The fields marked with “*” in each section are required. If those items are left empty or are entered incorrectly, an error message will be displayed, and you will not be able to proceed to the next section.
The data you input will be saved when you click the “Proceed” button on each confirmation page. After saving, you can continue from where you left off when you login again.
For “1 Applicant’s Information / Program of Your Choice”, upload your photo in JPEG format (500KB or smaller).
For “4 Educational Background”, if you have graduated from a foreign university, please upload your degree certificate in JPEG format (3MB or smaller, and 2000×2000 pixels or smaller). We will check the eligibility in advance.

Payment

You must pay 30,000 JPY as the examination fee before submitting your application. This is exempted for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) scholarship student and for student completing a master’s program of graduate schools of University of Tsukuba in March, 2023 or September, 2023The university accepts:

Credit Card Payment: Follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system and pay your fee by credit card. After the payment, you will be notified of a receipt number. Enter the number into the “Receipt Number” box on the Web Entry system and click the “Submit” button to proceed. After completing the payment, click “Print this Page” to print the payment completion screen. You are required to submit this print-out along with other documents.
Convenience Store Payment: Follow the instructions given at the last stage of the Web Entry system and pay your fee at a convenience store in Japan. After the payment, enter the code, payment date and convenience store name into the boxes on the Web Entry system and click the “Submit” button to proceed.

(*The examination fee is exempted for those who are Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarship student and who continue to doctoral program after completing a master’s program of graduate schools of University of Tsukuba in March, 2023 or September, 2023.)

Submission

After the payment is confirmed, you can submit your application by clicking the “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the university, and you will not be able to make any changes. Please check carefully before submitting.

After submitting your application, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to your registered e-mail address.

  • Individuals who have been granted a degree comparable to a Master’s Degree or a Professional Degree in a foreign country, or who are scheduled to obtain it by the end of March, 2023 (for Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English, September, 2023)
  • Individuals who have been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan
  • Individuals who have been recognized by the University of Tsukuba Graduate School through the eligibility screening to have academic ability equivalent or superior to a university graduate and will be 22 years of age or older by March 2023 (for Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English, September, 2023)

Special Selection Process for Recommended Applicants

An applicant who meets either of the following requirements and can guarantee enrollment if the applicant is accepted.

  1. (1) Individuals whose peer-reviewed academic papers (journal articles and international conference papers) have been accepted
  2. (2) Individuals who are enrolled in a Master’s course and have earned in approximately 70% or more A (excellent) grades among of the total credits earned in graduate school by the time of application

(1) For the academic articles, fill in the author(s) including the co-author(s), the title, the name of the journal, the volume, the number, the year of publication and the first and last page numbers. If the article is written in language other than Japanese and English, please add the abstract for the article in Japanese or English.

  3. (3) For project participating, fill in the name of the project, the term, outline and the charge of your work.

(1) Applicants who currently attend a university or graduate school as a full-time student (except those who are expected to graduate by March, 2023, for Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English applicants, September, 2023) need a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by the head of their university or graduate school (or the head of their department).You can use any format for this document.
    If you cannot prepare an approval letter, a letter of your declaration stating that studying in graduate school will cause no problem to move university, is acceptable as an alternative. Your seal is necessary.
  2. (2) Applicants who currently work full-time need a letter of approval allowing them to take the entrance examination, issued by your superior. You can use any format for this document.
    For applicants who will quit at the time of entry to graduate school or who cannot prepare a letter of your supervisor, a letter of your declaration stating that studying in graduate school will cause no harm to your work is acceptable as an alternative. Your seal is necessary.

Prepare for the Examination

Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used not only for affairs concerning admission and screening, but also for research and study aimed at the improvement of the admission procedure and university education. We will carefully take care of the data not to disclose your personal identity. Also, we will use the data to screen students for scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization, which are offered to individuals who have completed the enrollment procedures.

* University of Tsukuba have the special measures of examination fee exemption for the victims of disasters in Japan. For more details, please refer to this website.

Announcement of Acceptance

  • July Selection Process: 10:00 a.m., July 15 (Fri), 2022
  • August Selection Process: 10:00 a.m., September 16 (Fri), 2022
  • January to February Selection Process: 10:00 a.m., February 15 (Wed), 2023

A list of examinee number of successful applicants will be posted by the examinee number on the website below:

A letter of acceptance will be sent to successful applicants by registered mail on the same day.

Enrollment Procedure

  1. Enrollment Procedure Guidelines (which include documents to be submitted before entrance) will be sent out to successful applicants. Follow the direction in the Guidelines.

    Note: The successful applicants need to notify us in advance if they are moving house permanently before the date above or travelling when the documents are expected to be delivered.

  2. The documents should be mailed using a designated envelope (which will be sent to you along with the Enrollment Procedure Guidelines).

  3. Estimated Expenses Upon Entrance
    1. (a)Entrance fee are 282,000 Japanese Yen (nonrefundable)
    2. (b)Tuition: The tuition for the first semester of the 2022 academic year (April-September) is 267,900 Japanese Yen. The tuition for the second semester (October-March) is 267,900 Japanese Yen. Annual Amount: 535,800 Japanese Yen
        (Note)

      1. (1)If fees are revised before entrance or while enrolled in graduate school, the revised tuition fees will be applied.
      2. (2)The entrance fees are exempt for those who are the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) scholarship students or those who completes our Master’s program in March, 2023 or September, 2023 and continues to take our Doctoral Program.
  4. All applicants with a full-time job need a document or a letter (e.g., an order for a training course, a letter for a leave of absence, or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that they are available to complete the program. If you enroll after retirement, please submit a retirement certificate.
  5. International applicants must acquire a status of residence suitable for entrance to a graduate school, in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951), before beginning the enrollment procedures. Those who wish to enter our graduate program as an international student must acquire the status of residence as a “Student.”

12. Security Export Control

University of Tsukuba has established the University of Tsukuba Rules on Security Export Control in accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, and conducts strict examinations for acceptance of international students. International applicants who fall under any of the conditions set out in the regulations may be unable to enter their desired course or program.


Register Extending System | University of Tsukuba Graduate Admissions 2023

13. Register Extending System

Register Extending System allows students to complete a doctoral program in a period longer than usual.
The period can be extended from the standard 3 years to 4 or 5 years.
Extended applicants pay discounted tuition allocated per registered period. The total amount of tuition is the same as that of students who finish the program in the standard 3 years. This system is for students who prefer to complete the program over a longer period of time. Applicants are reviewed individually after the application.

Requirements for Eligibility | University of Tsukuba Graduate Admissions 2023

14. Requirements for Eligibility

In the case of applicants falling in category (1)-(2) of the Requirements for Eligibility shown below, eligibility screening (We will examine whether the applicant has more academic ability than who have completed the master’s course) is necessary. Please contact us.

  1. (1) Individuals recognized by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as having an ability equivalent or superior to a Master’s Degree or Professional Degree recipient in what concerns the admission to a graduate program, based on the Enforcement Regulation of the School Education Law, Article 156 Paragraph 5.
    1. Individuals who have graduated from a four-year university, and have been engaged in research at a university or research institute for more than two years.
    2. Individuals who have completed in course a 16-year program of school education in a country other than Japan or who, while residing in Japan, completed in course a 16-year program of school education abroad, through correspondence courses, and have been engaged in research at a university or research institute for more than two years.
  2. (2) Individuals who have been recognized by Doctoral Programs in Informatics in their individual qualification screening process as having an ability equivalent or superior to a Master’s Degree or Professional Degree recipient and who are 24 years old or will be 24 years old by the end of March, 2023 (September, 2023, for Special Selection Process of Global Individuals in English).
    Qualified person: Individuals who have graduated from a university, a junior college or an upper secondary school, individuals who have graduated from a vocational school or a similar school, individuals who have graduated from a university of a foreign country that implements less than 16 years of a school curriculum
