[Important] Information on Change in Method of

in Response to the COVID-19 Infections

There is a possibility that there will be changes in the method of the entrance examinations for the University of Tsukuba Graduate School for academic year 2021, depending on the situation regarding the spread of the infections of the COVID-19, such as changes to online entrance examinations, etc., after these application guidelines have been published. Also, there is a possibility that entrance examination days will be added, in connection with the changes in the examination method. The latest information on the entrance examinations is published on the Information page of the Graduate Admissions site, so it can be checked at any time.
In particular, when applying and before taking the examination, be sure to check the latest information in the Information page of the Graduate Admissions site.

Information Environment, Etc., Necessary if there is a Change to Online Entrance Examinations

At present the schedule, etc., envisaged for entrance examinations in the university (Tsukuba area) has been announced. However if there has to be a change to online entrance examinations at short notice, it will be announced on this site when the decision has been taken (as a guide, by August 7 in the case of September entrance examinations, and 1 month before the examination date for entrance examinations in October or later). Also if the examinations are to be held online, the following is advance notification of the preparations that must be made by those taking the examinations.

  1. Have a bright quiet private room environment
  2. Have a network environment capable of sending and receiving video
  3. Have a personal computer with a camera and microphone
    (using a speaker for voice output. The use of earphones or headphones, etc., that are fitted to the body are prohibited)
  4. Have a smartphone (with a camera) * Item 4 on the left is for emergency use in case of occurrence of network problems

Note that if you have questions regarding the examination environment or if you would like to do a communication test as preparation in advance for the possibility of online examinations, contact the inquiry desk of your program.

*Treatment of Private Sector English Proficiency Tests is described in the Information page of the Graduate Admissions site, so those intending to apply for programs that require a score report to be submitted should be sure to check this page.

Activation

When you sign up, the activation email will be sent to your email address registered. Click the activation URL on the email to activate your account.

Login

For the first time after the activation, you’re already logged in. Just click on the “Login” button to begin. When you visit our Login page the second time or later, enter your email address and password to log in.

My Page

At the “My Page”, you need to click on the “Application Form” button for the Master’s Program.
On the page, you can edit your login information or reset the password.

Application Form

There are four sections in the Application Form.

  1. Applicant’s Information
  2. Course Information/ Preferences
  3. Eligibility
  4. Educational Background

Each section will be saved when you click on the “Proceed” button on each confirmation page. After saving, you can continue from where you left off when you log in back.

On “1. Applicant’s Information,” upload your ID photo in JPEG format.
On “3. Eligibility,” describe your Background and Future Career Plan, within 1,000 words each in English.
On “4. Educational Background,” applicants who have graduated from a university outside Japan are required to upload their degree certificate in JPEG format, which is one of the documents to be submitted. (Since each country has different education systems, we need to confirm their eligibility for application.)

Payment

You must pay the examination fee before submitting your application. The University can accept:

  1. online credit card payment for both domestic and overseas applicants
  2. convenience store payment for domestic applicants only

*The MEXT scholarship students are exempted from paying the fees.

Submission

You can submit your application by clicking the “Submit to Apply” button. Once you click on the button, the information you have entered will be sent to the University, and you will not be able to go back to edit. Make sure to double-check before proceeding.

Print Generated PDF Documents

After clicking on the “Submit to Apply” button, “Reference Card” and “Address Sheet” will be generated in PDF for printing.
You can download them from the Web Entry system only during the application period.

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Individuals who have graduated or who will graduate from a Japanese four-year university by March 2021

3. Web Entry and Supporting Documents to be Submitted

With our Web Entry system, you can apply online. Read this section carefully before applying online. The first screening is conducted on both the information of web Entry and the documents to be posted.

You are requested to upload the JPEG data of your ID photo for the Reference Card. The ID photo must be taken within three months with no hats.

TOEIC/ TOEFL/ IELTS Score All applicants except for those whose first or native language is English Read the following and check the appropriate box indicated on the Web Entry system:

[IMPORTANT] Private Sector English Proficiency Tests for AY2021 Entrance Examinations for Graduate Schools of University of Tsukuba

Applicants are required to submit their English Language proficiency test scores as part of their application (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS). However, if you cannot submit the original results certificate during the application period by post, please contact the Life Science Innovation Program office. In this case, submit/bring the test result certificate on the entrance examination day.

Documents Required for Remarks
Letter of Recommendation All applicants A recommendation letter of the department dean or the supervisor, from which the applicant graduated/is expected to graduate, should be sent to the admission office. The recommendation letter must be written on A4/letter-size paper with the department-letter-head printed and with the signature of the recommender. The letter should be converted to a PDF file and must be sent to the T-LSI Office by the recommender directly by email.

If any credits were transferred from another school, submit an academic transcript from that school. (All documents must be in English or Japanese.)

International applicants who meet the following conditions Government-sponsored international students enrolled in another university are required to submit a certificate of government-sponsored international student issued by the university.

Notes: Results from the entrance examination, as well as personal information obtained by the University of Tsukuba from the application documents, will be used not only for affairs concerning admission and screening, but also research and study aimed at improvement of the admission procedure and the university education. At the time you apply for Convenience Store Payment online, you will be given an 11-digit or a 13-digit application number. The number is required when you make the payment at the convenience store.

5. Application Procedure

  1. Visit our Web Entry system to apply. The Web Entry system will be available from September 1 – September 18, 2020.
  2. Some of the documents have to be mailed to the Office of Master’s/Doctoral Program in Life Science Innovation by express mail. Your documents need to be received by September 18, 2020. Original documents submitted will be returned to you after the examination. When you submit your application online, the system will ask you to create the Address Sheet. Print out the sheet created and attach it to the envelope when sending the required documents to us.

7. Announcement of Acceptance and Enrollment Procedure

Announcement of Acceptance

The examinee numbers of successful applicants will be posted on our website on November 6, 2020. Acceptance notification will be sent to the successful applicants by email.

Enrollment Procedure

  1. Enrollment Procedure Guidelines (which contain documents to be submitted before entrance) will be sent out to successful applicants on February 17, 2021. Follow the direction in the Guidelines.
    (Note)
    The successful applicants are expected to notify us before the date above if they change their postal address.
  2. The deadline of Enrollment Procedure
    You must send your documents with a specified envelope by March 5, 2021. Follow the direction in the Guidelines.
  3. Expenses Required upon Entrance
    • (a) Entrance fees are 282,000 Japanese Yen (non-refundable).
    • (b) Tuition: The tuition for the first semester of the 2021 academic year (April – September) is 267,900 Japanese Yen. The tuition for the second semester (October – March) is 267,900 Japanese Yen. (Yearly Amount: 535,800 Japanese Yen)

      (Note)
      If fees are revised before entrance or while enrolled in this Graduate School, the revised tuition fees will be applied.
      The entrance fees are exempted from the Government-Sponsored (Japanese Government Monbukagakusho scholarship) international students.

  4. All applicants with a job (except part-time) need a document or a letter (ex; an order for a training course, a letter of leave of absence, or an approval letter) from the employer to prove that you are available to complete the program.
  5. International applicants must acquire a Status of Residence suitable for entrance to a graduate school, following the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951), before beginning enrollment procedures. Those who wish to enter this program as an international student must acquire Status of Residence as a “Student.”The documents to apply a Status of Residence suitable for entrance will be sent by SIGMA.

Security Export Control

The University of Tsukuba has established the University of Tsukuba Rules on Security Export Control following the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, and conducts strict examinations for acceptance of international students, etc. International applicants who fall under any of the conditions set out in said regulations may be unable to enter their desired course or program.
